3) Exhibition: The Gift at National Gallery Singapore
What is in a gift? From social act to cultural performance or philosophical concept, the apparently ordinary act of gifting is in fact ambivalent and paradoxical, and consequently a source of fascination, vexation and debate. Unlike the economic transaction, the gift is more than the object of its exchange. It is an embodiment of an expansiveness of spirit by the giver, that often obliges its receiver, and may even unintendedly become an onerous burden.
Till 7 November 2021, catch this exhibition at City Hall Wing, Level B1, The Ngee Ann Kongsi Concourse Gallery, National Gallery Singapore.
4) Visit: Those Moonlit Moments… at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall
As part of its annual Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations from 31 August to 26 September, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH) will be presenting a special outdoor lantern installation created in collaboration with Thailand artist Boonyavee Boonsakda (Ngaew Ngaew).
Titled Those Moonlit Moments… the outdoor installation features four large lantern replicas, including the artist’s characters enjoying the mooncakes and each other’s companies under the gentle and watchful eye of Ngaew’s Moon Rabbit. The adorable Moon Rabbit character was created especially for the Mid-Autumn Festival, inspired by the Jade Rabbit from Chinese folklore, a mythical character that keeps the goddess Chang’e company on the moon.
