3) Get Creative: Design for Deities: An International Heritage Design Competition #SupportLocalSG

Propose a redesign of the statue of the Monkey God – an ancient mythological figure known for his playfulness, intelligence and tenacity – for a secular international audience. The competition is organised by Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop, Singapore’s last Taoist effigy-making shop, established in 1896.

Through this competition, we hope to to reverse the decline of the 124-year-old shop in partnerhip with the community through the co-creation of a new contemporary product line, so that more non-Chinese audiences around the world can appreciate the stories of these mythological figures – and the timeless values they embody – in exciting new ways.

Cash prizes are also up for grabs with the 1st prize at S$1.5k. Open to all regardless of race, religion or country of residence as well as designers of all skill levels – professional, amateur or zero. Submit your design by 9 August 2020. Join HERE or find out more!

Together, they will discuss art and video games, providing insight into how art, popular culture and literature intertwine while bringing viewers through some of the artworks in the Gallery’s long-term exhibition, Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia since the 19th Century. The tour will also be interspersed with personal reflections on the video games they play.

Viewers will be invited to create their own ekphrastic responses at the end of the programme with a creative writing prompt!
